Cameron Highlands, Malaysia’s premier hill resort is located on the Main Range of Peninsular Malaysia. At 1,829 metres above sea level, it has a temperature ranging from 16 degrees to 24 degrees Celsius. Much of its appeal lies in the neat sprawling tea plantations that date back to 1929 as well as the terraced flower farms, strawberry farms and vegetable garden.
Cameron Highlands consists of a series of little towns that include Ringlet, Tanah Rata, Brinchang, Tringkap, Kuala Terla and Kampung Raja. The best tourist amenities can be found around Tanah Rata, the administrative centre of the highlands but Brinchang is fast catching up with a number of hotels, service apartments and restaurants.
TOP ATTRACTIONS @ CAMERON HIGHLANDS
Tea Plantations: The most prominent tourism attraction related to Cameron Highlands. Visit the tea factory to learn the finer aspects of tea grading, blending and processing and cap it off by savouring a cup of freshly brewed tea.
Bird Watching: The forests of Cameron Highlands are ideal for bird watching as they host species such as the long-tailed broadbill, orange-billed lea bird, grey-chinned minivet and the silver-eared broadbill. For good sightings, choose the longer trails that lead up to quiet peaks such as Gunung Beremban and Gunung Jasar.
Strawberry Farm: Across the road, on the hill overlooking the golf course, are strawberry farms where fresh strawberries, home-made jam and marmalades are available for sale.
Butterfly Farm: There are several butterfly farms located near the main road in Brinchang. Butterflies flit in naturally-simulated environment of a tropical garden. Have a look-out for the largest of them all, the shimmering green Rajah Brooke butterflies.
Honey Bee Farm: Beekeeping is a recent activity in the highlands and the bee farm is located at Brinchang, just after the butterfly farm. Honeycombs and honey are available for sale.
Other attractions: Visit the Rainbow Garden, Sam Poh Temple and the Robinson Waterfall. A visit to the MARDI Agriculture Station at Tanah Rata will give you an insight how agriculture plays an important role in the hills of Cameron Highlands.
